Benedict Timothy Carlton Cumberbatch, was born in London 1977, to actors Timothy Cumberbatch and Wanda Ventham.
As a child he attended the prestigious Brambletye School, a selective preparatory school in England. This was followed by admission to the Harrow School, widely considered one of the best Independent schools in the UK. It was here that he got his first taste at performing, in the role of Tatiana, Queen of the Fairies, in Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream.
After school, he was accepted to study Drama at Manchester University, but took a Gap year to teach English in a Tibetian Monastery.
After completing his bachelor's at Manchester, he was accepted to study at London Academy of Music and Drama.
Benedict's first major role was depicting the brilliant Professor Stephen Hawking, in the BBC drama Hawking. In preparation for the role he met Prof. Hawking several times, and his performance gained him a nomination as Best Actor, at the British Academy Television Awards.
Since then he as worked on several plays, television dramas and has starred in several major films, including Atonement and The Other Boleyn Girl.
